What is a touring motorcycle? When it comes to motorcycles, touring models are the ultimate in comfort. There is no disputing this. Touring bikes are meant to ride the open road for very long distances. Across the country or state, it makes no difference. With their huge powerful engines, ample storage, large over-sized windshields and fairings, soft suspension, top of the line navigation and entertainment systems and other comfort features, there is no comparison to this type of motorcycle.

With a touring bike, you'll sit upright on a soft cushiony seat. You'll have a full-featured dashboard in front of you and a passenger seat in back. Touring motorcycles are actually very good for passengers as they'll accompany you virtually unnoticed. Due to the substantial weight of the bike, the additional passenger weight will be marginal.

It should also be noted that touring motorcycles truly are designed for touring. Because of the long distance needs of specific riders, manufacturers developed larger engines that excel at extended riding. These manufacturers also engineered larger fuel tanks to minimize fuel stops for refills.

There are a few nicknames given to this type of bike: bagger, full bagger, full dresser, full dress tourer, or dresser. The names were originally used to describe the Harley Davidson tourers, but now mainstream riders use them for all brands of touring bikes.

If you're looking to buy a new or used touring motorcycle, check out these brands. They are the most popular globally: Harley Davidson, Indian Motorcycle, BMW, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Honda.
