What is a sportbike? These types of motorbikes, otherwise known as superbikes and supersports, are generally known for their speed, cornering, handling and overall performance. Where these motorcycles truly excel is on smooth pavement or on the track. They're engineered, developed and tuned for extreme speed, acceleration, cornering and braking. While they aren't the most efficient when it comes to filling up the gas tank, they sure are a lot of fun to ride. Their lack of fuel efficiency is a considerable drawback though and it must be taken into account when it comes time to purchase your next bike.

What makes this type of motorcycle different than other types? As stated above, it's all about performance when it comes to buying and riding sportbikes. The rush of riding comes from the enormous amount of pull a rider feels when accelerating. Oftentimes, that pull is enough to sway a buyer into making the purchase. Really though, the pull isn't all there is. For more experienced riders, much of their appreciation stems from the fact that these motorcycles are simply awesome at cornering and braking. Racing is a primary activity of sport bike owners and when it comes time to ride, they know they'll be getting a workout. The ride is very involved and a lot of movement is necessary.

Sport bikes are offered with a variety of engine sizes. They start as small as 250cc and go all the way up to 1300cc. Many of the more popular models carry 750cc and 1000cc engines. In general, but not always, the larger the cubic centimeter engine a bike offers, the more power and speed potential it will have. Again, it must be noted that the larger engines use more fuel, so keep that in mind when buying your next new or used sportbike motorcycle for sale.

This type of motorcycle is constantly being engineered and improved upon. Today's sportbike is a far cry from those made in the 70s. Today's models focus on suspension, brakes, aerodynamics and other types of modern technologies such as ABS and traction control. With the amount of sheer horsepower these bikes offer, everything must be kept up to standards.

With this type of motorcycle traditionally being used for street and track racing, it's important to note that the rider will almost always be forward leaning in an aggressive posture. This can be tiring at times. This is not a cruising bike. The riding position can become quite uncomfortable for many people. The handlebars are low and the footpeg position is such that it will force the rider into somewhat of a tucked position.

If you're looking to buy a new or used sportbike motorcycle, check out these brands. They are the most popular globally: Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Ducati, Aprilia, BMW, and KTM.
